The Relaunch
Now under the stewardship of Racesafe, we have done our very best to ensure we offer the same Thermatex products that people have loved for generations. Made with the same iconic Thermatex fabric in Britain, production has moved to our Northamptonshire workshop.
We are launching with a core range of our most popular designs. You can browse the full range here: Shop All.
Over time we will be adding more styles and options to the collection. If there is something that you are particularly looking for, please let us know, it will help us better understand what is of highest demand.
To focus on relaunching Thermatex successfully and true to the brand, there is a reduced launch range that we hope will widen once production is established.
Sizing
Yes, there is a size guide on every product page.
No. Because of the nature of the fabric, we recommend generally ordering one size SMALLER than your standard fit.
Length: measure from the centre of the chest along the side of the horse to an imaginary line dropping from the base of the tail.
Neck: measure from just in front of the wither in a slight curve to the centre of the chest, then double it.
Depth: from the centre of the rug down to the depth required. Wither to tail is the headline measurement for rug sizes.
Thermatex horse rugs coming in sizes 4'0 upwards to 7'0. 7'3 is available made to measure.
Made to measure is generally £60. Get in touch with the measurements and we will confirm before going ahead.
Eight sizes, from a chihuahua at neck 9in / back 9.5in / depth 5in, up to a Great Dane at neck 26in / back 30in / depth 17in. Separate chart for long dogs (greyhounds, lurchers, whippets) in sizes 4 to 7. Full charts are available on the product pages.
Small 600 x 660mm, Medium 600 x 900mm, Large 1660 x 1100mm, Extra Large 1200 x 900mm. All have a non-slip base.
The Fabric and What it Does
Thermatex has been making cooler rugs and accessories for over fifty years, built around one technically advanced knitted fabric.
Three layers: an inner and outer knitted layer with a central insulation layer of polypropylene. It wicks moisture from the inside of the fabric to the surface, where it evaporates into the atmosphere rather than being absorbed. The horse is left warm and dry. Any excess that has not evaporated can be shaken off.
A wool and acrylic blend, with yarns spun specifically for Thermatex, and a polypropylene insulation layer.
After exercise, after a wash down, during travel, or as a stable rug. The fabric moulds to the horse and the fibres interlock with the coat as they warm, so the rug stays in position. Its thermal value is high relative to its bulk, so it is warm without being heavy.
Yes. The insulation layer provides warmth and helps the horse hold optimum body temperature. Widely used as a stable rug.
Machine washable in a domestic machine, even the large sizes. We recommend washing on a wool or gentle wash at 30 degrees, with a short spin cycle. Do not tumble dry.
No. The fabric is pre-shrunk and colour fast. It will not flatten in storage either, because the polypropylene filling stays in place rather than dropping.
The same knitted outer fabric without the inner or insulation layer. Ideal in warmer weather and warmer climates.
Yes. The gilets and dog coats are the same Thermatex fabric but feature a smaller quilt check than the rugs
